Earthquake Rocks Philippines, Causing Minor Damage and Injuries

Recent Tremor Felt in Cortes Surigao Del Sur

A moderate earthquake struck the Philippines in the early hours of April 5, 2024, causing minor damage and injuries. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported the quake as having a magnitude of 5.7 and a depth of 11 kilometers.

Details of the Earthquake

According to PHIVOLCS, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 011 kilometers south and 29 kilometers east of Cortes Surigao Del Sur. The quake was felt in several parts of Mindanao, including Cagayan de Oro City, Butuan City, and Davao City.

The earthquake caused some damage to buildings and infrastructure, including collapsed walls and cracked roads. Several people were also injured, but no fatalities have been reported so far.

Increased Seismic Activity

The earthquake is part of a recent increase in seismic activity in the Philippines. In the past 24 hours, PHIVOLCS has recorded 296 earthquakes of various magnitudes. The most significant of these was a magnitude 6.5 quake that struck offshore of Bicol Region on April 4, 2024.

Safety Precautions

PHIVOLCS has advised residents in affected areas to take safety precautions, including checking their homes for damage, staying away from damaged buildings, and being prepared for aftershocks.
